Music about animals & for amusement
Renaissance songs and dances from composers all over Europe, the collection of T. Ravenscroft, the Cancionero de Palacio and Cancionero Upsala, german, french, dutch composers.
Who:
(Music-) students, (music-) teachers, people, who are interested in playing and singing music from renaissance are welcome to attend the course. The instruments used are: renaissance recorders (all sizes), crumhorns, kortholt, cornamuse, courtal, cornett, serpent, shawms, rackett and all other renaissance wood wind instruments, viols (all sizes), baroque violin, fiddles, rebec, lute, harp, psaltery, all other kinds of medieval and renaissance plucked instruments, percussion. Beside this there will be plenty of chance for all participants to sing a capella or accompanied.
What:
Subject of the course is music about animals and for amusement. We will work on music with different character, little folkmusic- like songs, funny non sense songs, drinking songs, homophone and polyphone settings of madrigals and dance music from all over Europe.
We will offer a seminary in singing gregorian chant. The former cantor of the monastery Heiligenkreuz will teach how to read and sing the gregorian chant.
There will be a small singing class and a vocal warm up for all participants.
At the end of the course we will perform some of the pieces, we practiced during the week on Saturday, 29th July. During the convent mass on Sunday morning (30th July, 9.30 am) we will perform a massand some of the sacred songs.
Who teaches:
Gertraud Umlauft: is teacher for violin, recorder and ensemble music and leads a class for Early Music in the Beethoven- Musikschule, Mödling near Vienna. 1981 she founded the early music group Medelike Consort and had concerts, radio and TV transmissions in many countries. 1991 the consort produced a CD with music form the prints of Tilman Susato. Since 1984 she organizes and leads the summer courses in Heiligenkreuz, which are attended by musicians from Austria, Germany, Swizzerland, Japan and USA. She built some instruments like rebec, fiddles, psaltery, harp, sopranino shawm, crumhorns (kits). She plays viol, fiddles, rebec, saz, psaltery, recorder, shawms, windcap instruments. She makes transcriptions from facsimiles, many of them for the use of the Medelike Consort or in the summer courses.
Pater Walter Ludwig, O.cis was many years cantor of the monastery Heiligenkreuz and made many seminaries about gregorian chant during the summer courses. Now he is parish priest in a village near Heilgenkreuz, Gaaden.
Monica Marubayashi is singing teacher and violist in London and will do singing lessons and vocal warm up..
The monastery Heiligenkreuz:

The Summer School is held in the monastery Heiligenkreuz, ca 20 km south-west from Vienna. The monastery is the first Cistercian monastery founded in Austria, dating from the 12th century. It hosted several Babenberger and Habsburger monarchs, some of them are burried here.
The guests of the summer course have their accommodations in the guest house of the monastery in twin bed rooms. Some of them have very beautiful baroque interior. The seminars are held in the beautiful, newly restored Kaisersaal.
The guests of the summer course can visit the morning and evening songs in the monastery.
