The upper transport

A brief description


Pfaff calls the the upper transport on their sewing machines "IDT" (Integrated Dual Transport). Although some people like to name it a "walking foot" it is rather a metal finger behind the sewing foot. On a 1222 of the early seventies it looks like this:

The first picture shows the IDT on a 1222 disengaged. The metal finger is at its upper position and the machine can transport the fabric only by use of its bottom teeth, like any other sewing machine. On the second picture the IDT is engaged. The metal finger is switched into its lower position and can now grab the fabric just behind the needle... ... and pull it through under the sewing foot together with the bottom teeth. The arrow shows the movement of the IDT during one stitch.
